c23 brings a visceral online presence to filmmaker Benjamin Niles’ critically acclaimed story of music + craftsmanship in the machine age. From forest floor to Carnegie Hall, this stirring film documents the one-year labor of love that produces the most thoroughly hand-crafted instrument in the world: the Steinway Grand.
From the forest floor of Alaska to the a concert hall in New York City, Note By Note: The Making of Steinway L1037 follows a single Steinway Grand Piano, L1037, through the one-year labor of love that culminates in a masterpiece of musical achievement and human craftsmanship.
Recently selected as a Communication Arts Webpick, the site introduces the user to the craftsmen, musicians and manufacturing processes that inform this compelling story. It features an interactive time line of each step in the manufacturing process; interviews with musicians like Harry Connick, Jr., Lang Lang and Marcus Roberts; screening information and film trailers; an online store for DVD purchases; and an interactive blog whereby users can post their own musical stories.
On the back end, the site employs a custom Content Management System that allows the filmmaker to update portions of the site quickly and easily, with no technical knowledge of website code.
